Fujitsu T4010 Tablet PC
by Linda A. Epstein
May 2005
The Fujitsu
Lifebook T4010 is a 1.8 ghz convertible style Tablet PC, which is the
fastest processor available currently shipping in a Tablet PC. With 512
ram installed the Fujitsu's boot time is just under 60 seconds. We got a
very respectable and 4 Hours 17 minutes of battery life with the Tablet
running in always on mode, with the wireless on, no standby, no
hibernate and the screen and hard drive set to always on.
Fujitsu also
includes an excellent "Getting Started with your Lifebook T series
Tablet PC" that has both visual diagrams and step by step instructions
for turning on and setting up and getting started with your new tablet
pc. For those who are not Familiar with a Tablet PC this comes in very
handy.
The 12.1 inch
display is clear and the color saturation is good. The new 160 degree
wide viewing angle means you do not have to be sitting front and center
to clearly see the screen. This comes in handy when your trying to
share the screen with others for demo purposes.
The case design
of T4010 Tablet PC is comfortable in your hand and buttons as well as
pen removal are easy to use even with long finger nails. While the
T4010 does get warm it does not get hot.
As you can see the screen on the T4010 can be easily used in
the shade
if you intend on using
your T4010 outdoors you will need to upgrade to the indoor/outdoor
screen.
The
screen swivels smoothly and the T4010 will automatically detect when
you swivel the screen and change from from landscape mode to portrait
mode and back accordingly.
Another feature
worth noting is the fact that the Fujitsu Optical drive can be replaced
with a "Blank Bay", in doing so you reduce the weight of the T4010 by 7
ounces. Another option is swapping out the optical drive for a second
battery to extend your running time.
As you can see from the photos above the indoor
display can not be seen in full sun
Although the LifeBook T4010 we
have here came with integrated Bluetooth, and a DVD RW neither the
Bluetooth software or the DVD software came pre-loaded on the Tablet.
While this is an annoying inconvenience, the problem is easily solved as
the software for both the Bluetooth and the DVD are on the included CD
ROMS that ship with the T4010.
The most notable con we came
across is the substandard sound the emenates from the built in
speakers. The T4010 Tablet PC is Not for those who like to
listen to CD's while working. ( If down the line we find that this was
an isolated problem with our test machine we will make a point of
correcting this review and letting you know.)
From the Fujitsu Web site: One-Touch
Application Launch Buttons
There are five intuitive and easy-to-use buttons
that enable you to launch applications or easily navigate within them.
With one-touch launch buttons you can easily rotate your screen
orientation or scroll up and down within an application document. Each
of these buttons also has secondary functions, and two of the secondary
functions are user-programmable which means you can assign your most
commonly used applications to those buttons for quick and easy access.
Clearly Fujitsu has gone out of the way to ensure
that the functions of its Tablet PC are easy to locate and easy to
access, which makes the "out of box" user experience much beter.

The Display:
While the 12.1 inch XGA Screen has nice color, it is not as
clean or as crisp as we have come to expect from a expected from

have 6 other tablets sitting on the desk to compare it with. While
this is not the outdoor viewable screen you can see it well outdoors in
indirect light
